QuizTime(41) Who was that Sahabi died from small pox shortly after accepting Islam, while on his way to his home tribe Najd ?

Ans:  Zayd al-Khayr.(r.a)

When Zayd al-Khayr heard the news of the Prophet, peace be upon him, he made some of his own enquiries and then decided to go to Madinah to meet the Prophet.

When they reached Madinah, they went straight to the Prophet's Mosque and tethered their mounts at its door. It happened that as they entered, the Prophet was on the mimbar addressing the Muslims. His speech aroused Zayd and his delegation and they were also astonished by the rapt attention of the Muslims and the effect of the Prophet's words on them. The Prophet was saying:

"I am better for you than al-Uzza (one of the main idols of the Arabs in Jahiliyyah) and everything else that you worship. I am better for you than the black camel which you worship besides God."

The reaction of Zayd and others was different. When the Prophet had finished speaking, Zayd stood up, tall and impressive-looking in the midst of the Muslims and said in a loud and clear voice:

"O Muhammad, I testify that there is no god but Allah and that you are the messenger of Allah."

The Prophet came up to him and asked, "Who are you"

"I am Zayd al-Khayl the son of Muhalhil."

"From now on you are Zayd al-Khayr instead, not Zayd al-Khayl," said the Prophet. "Praise be to God Who has brought you from the hills and dales of your native land and softened your heart towards Islam." Thereafter he was known as Zayd al-Khayr (Zayd the Good).

During this visit, all those who stayed with Zayd became Muslims. They then desired to return to their homes in Najd and the Prophet bade them farewell. The great desire of Zayd al-Khayr to work and fight for the cause of Islam, however was not to be realized.

In Madinah al-Munawwarah at that time there was an epidemic of fever and Zayd al-Khayr succumbed to it and said to those with him: "Take me away from the land of Qays. I have the fever of small pox. By God, I shall not fight as a Muslim before I meet Allah, the Mighty the Great."

Zayd took the road to his people in Najd in spite of the fact that the fever became more and more intense and slowed him down. He hoped at least to get back to his people and that they would become Muslims, through God's grace, at his hands. He struggled to overcome the fever but it got the better of him and he breathed his last on the way before reaching Najd. Between his acceptance of Islam and his death, however, there was no time for him to have fallen into sin.

QuizTime (40): Which Sahabhi didn't stopped Qur'an recitation even after He was shot by 2 arrows by enemies in a valley at night?

QuizTime (40): Which Sahabhi didn't stopped Qur'an recitation even after He was shot by 2 arrows by enemies in a valley at night?

Ans: Abbad Ibn Bishr (RA)

Abbad (RA) accompanied the Prophet {saws} in all his military expeditions, and in each one he performed in a way befitting the reciter of the Qur'an.

Meanwhile, the Muslims were busy making their camp and getting their camels to kneel so they could tie them up for the night. Then the Prophet, {saws}, asked: "Who is going to stand guard over us tonight?"

Abbad ibn Bishr and Ammar ibn Yasir got up together and volunteered. They had been made brothers by the Prophet {saws}, when the Mhuhajirun (emigrants) had first gone to Madina. When they went and took up their position at the entrance to the ravine, Abbad ibn Bishr said to his brother Ammar ibn Yasir: "which half of the night do you prefer to sleep in, the first or the last?" "I will sleep for the first half," said Ammar and he lied down to sleep a few paces away from Abbad.

The night was clear, calm and peaceful. Every star, tree and rock seemed to give praise and glory to its Lord, and the heart of Abbad longed to share in the worship by reciting the Qur'an while he was offering Salah, (prayer) and thus he enjoyed the pleasure of reciting along with that of the ceremony of worship.

He faced the Qiblah (direction for prayer), started the prayer, and then began to recite from Qur'an Surah (chapter) of Kahf, in his sweet, emotional voice. Like one swimming in an ocean of divine light, he seemed to be overcome by the spirituality of his setting. Engrossed in worship, he did not notice a man who had appeared on the scene and was rapidly moving towards him. When the man saw Abbad in Bishr standing at the entrance to the ravine, he knew that the Prophet {saws}, and his Companions were camped inside and that this person was their watchman.

Drawing an arrow from his quiver, he set it in his bow, took aim, and shot it into Abbad ibn Bishr, who simply pulled it out of his body and continued his worship! The man shot him again and hit him, but Abbad only pulled this arrow out, as well; so the man shot him a third time. Abbad pulled the arrow out again, but this time crawled over to his friend and awakened him, saying: "Get up, for I have been seriously wounded."

When the man realized that there were two people keeping guard, he fled. Ammar took a good look at Abbad, and realized that he was bleeding heavily from three wounds, so he exclaimed: "Glory be to Allah, and why did you not awaken me as soon as you were hit the first time?" "I was in the middle of reciting a Surah from the Qur'an," answered Abbad, "and I did not wish to interrupt my reciting in the middle, before I finished. I swear by Allah, if I had not feared that I would leave the army unguarded after the Messenger of Allah {saws}, had commanded me to keep watch, I would have preferred death to being interrupted!

QuizTime(39) : Which Prophet of Allah killed Goliath ?

QuizTime(39) : Which Prophet of Allah killed Goliath ?

Ans: Dawood(peace be upon him).

So they defeated them by permission of Allah, and David killed Goliath(Jalut) and Allah gave him the kingship and prophethood and taught him from that which He willed.
[Al-Qur'an ch 2 Verse 251]

David (pbuh) and Goliath Fight

The king dressed David in battle armor and handed him a sword, but David was not used to wearing battle dress. He felt uncomfortable in it, and it obstructed his movements. He removed the armor, then collected a few pebbles and filled his leather pouch with them. He slung it over his shoulder next to his sling. With his wooden staff in hand, he began to walk towards the enemy. Saul was worried and asked him how on earth, with a sling and a couple of stones was he going to defend himself against the giant? David replied: "Allah Who protected me from the claws of the bear and the fangs of the lion will certainly protect me from this brute!"

When Goliath set eyes on the lean young man who looked like a boy, he laughed loudly and roared: "Are you out to play war with one of your playmates, or are you tired of your life? I will simply cut off your head with one swipe of my sword!" David shouted back: "You may have armor, shield, and sword, but I face you in the name of Allah, the Lord of the Israelites, Whose laws you have mocked. Today you will see that it is not the sword that kills but the will and power of Allah!"

So saying, he took his sling and placed in it a pebble from his pouch. He swung and aimed it at Goliath. The pebble shot from the whirling sling with the speed of an arrow and hit Goliath's head with great force. Blood gushed out, and Goliath thumped to the ground, lifeless, before he had a chance to draw his sword. When the rest of his men saw their mighty hero slain, they took to their heels. The Israelites followed in hot pursuit, taking revenge for their years of suffering at the hands of their enemy, killing every soldier they could lay hands on. In this battle the Israelites regained the glory and honor that had been lost for a long time.

David became a hero overnight. Saul kept his word and married his daughter Michal (Miqel) to the young warrior and took him under his wing as one of his chief advisors.

Quiz time(38): Which Prophet of Allah called his own wife, "My Sister" ?

QuizTime(38): Which Prophet of Allah called his own wife, "My Sister" ?

Ans:  Ibrahim(pbuh) called his Wife Sarah(May Allah mercy be upon her) as Sister in Islam.

The Hadith as narrated in the book of Muslim is as follows:

"Ibn Sirin narrates from Abu Hurayra that said, "Ibrahim, (pbuh), never lied except three times, two were for the sake of God, the Mighty, when He said, 'I am sick' and 'The biggest of them did it.' And one was about Sareh. He went by the land of one of the tyrants with Sareh, who was very beautiful. He said to Sareh 'This is a tyrant person, if he knows that you are my wife he will overcome me (kill me) because of you. So if he asked you tell him that you are my sister. You are in deed my sister in Islam, and I do not know any Muslims on the face of earth except myself and you." ... (Muslim, 2371).

According to the Hadith, Ibrahim (pbuh) did not tell the truth in three occasions:

1. When he said he was Saqeem, which can be translated as weak or ill (37:89).

2. When he said that the big idol had destructed the other idols (21:63).

3. When he advised Sarah to say she was his sister when she met the tyrant.

By stretching the meaning of lie one may consider the above three as lies, however none of them really go under that meaning of lie that is condemned.

A review of verses, Qur’an ch 6 Verses 76-79 shows that Ibrahim (pbuh) had a very unique and effective approach in preaching. He would orchestrate a situation in order to illustrate the false beliefs of his people and let them come to conclusions themselves. Instances one and two above are also part of this:

1) Ibrahim says he is ill (or weak) to excuse himself from the ceremony that people were at, in order to have an opportunity to break the idols. When some one is not in a mood to attend a ceremony he can simply say that he is not feeling well meaning that his mood is not befitting with the ceremony. This is not saying the truth in an exact way but is also not a total lie.

2) In the second instance Ibrahim (pbuh) says something that is not true (i.e. the big idol destructing the other ones), but everyone else also knows that it is not true. He knows that everyone knows this is not true and everyone knows that he knows that no one considers this to be true! This is not a lie. This is a sarcastic and at the same time a powerful way of showing people how baseless and
ridiculous their belief is.

3) As for the third instance, the wording of the Hadith itself suggests that Ibrahim (pbuh) intended the truth, but not all the truth and not the exact truth. Sareh was in deed his sister in Islam (1). All that happens is that it was not revealed that here 'sister' does not mean literal sister, and it was not revealed that she was also his wife. There are times that we should be ready to sacrifice our lives for the sake of the truth and in these times we are not to lie about ourselves and our beliefs. However there are also life threatening situations where no sacrifice is needed or even applicable. I do not think that the Almighty expects us to say the truth and then die as the result in these situations. Verse 16:106 of the Qur'an even allows denying the faith (while holding it in the heart) if that  can save one's life (like the story of Ammar ibn Yasir).

According to some scholars, what was intended by lying in those situations was only to use equivocations (Tawriyah, i.e. saying something which has more than one meaning and intending a meaning different from what the listener is likely to understand) rather than explicit lies. The scholars stated that attributing lies to Ibrahim (A.S.) in this context, does not mean explicit lying.

QuizTime(37): Which tyrant King & his soldiers were punished/killed by mosquitoes.

QuizTime(37): Which tyrant King & his soldiers were punished/killed by mosquitoes.

Ans: Nimrood

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The books of Tafseer (interpretation of the Quran) and history reported that the death of Nimrood and his soldiers was caused by mosquitoes. Nimrood died because of a mosquito that entered into his nostrils and reached his brain, and this caused him to start hitting his head for a long time until he died.

The Tafseer of Muhammad al-Kittaani Al-Idreesi reads, “Nimrood, the dictator and tyrant who considered himself to be god, the disbeliever, tried to inflict harm upon Ibraaheem (Abraham), but Allaah gave a sweeping victory to Ibraaheem as Allaah hit Nimrood and his people with the smallest and most despicable creation. He sent mosquitoes upon them; a mosquito would enter their ears, and then their nostrils, and it would keep moving until it reached their brain; as a result, they died.”

Also, At-Tafseer Al-Waseet authored by Az-Zuhayli reads:

“It was reported that when Ibraaheem may Allaah exalt his mention came out of the fire safe and sound, he was brought to Nimrood, and the latter spoke to him and declared his insistence on disbelief, and he said to Ibraaheem, 'O Ibraaheem, where are the soldiers of your Lord whom you claim?' Ibraaheem said to him, 'Allaah will show you the work of the weakest and most vulnerable of His soldiers;' so Allaah sent down a cloud of mosquitoes on Nimrood and his people, and the mosquitoes ate them all. A mosquito entered the head of Nimrood, and he had his head hit with sticks and the like, and he was tortured with this mosquito for so long, and he died because of it.”

For more information on this tyrant with Ibraaheem may Allaah exalt his mention you may refer to Al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah authored by Ibn Katheer may Allaah have mercy upon him and other books.

Quiz time(36): Who was that Man who believed on Ibrahim(Pbuh) faith and later became prophet after him ?

Quiz time(36): Who was that Man who believed on Ibrahim(Pbuh) faith and later became prophet after him ?

Ans: Prophet Lut (Peace be upon him).

“And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, "Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."[Al-Qur’an ch 29 Verse 26]

“Allah tells us that Lut believed in Ibrahim. It was said that he was the son of Ibrahim's brother, and that his name was Lut bin Haran bin Azar. None of Ibrahim's people believed in Ibrahim besides Lut and Sarah the wife of Ibrahim”. [Tafsir ibn Kathir]

Ibrahim (Pbuh) continued calling people to believe in Allah, exerting a great effort to guide his people to the right path. He tried every possible means to convince them. However in spite of his love and care for the people, they did not listened to him and deserted him. Only one woman and one man of his people shared his belief in Allah. The woman was named Sarah who later became his wife while the man was Lut who later became a prophet after him.

Prophet Lut AS was the nephew of the Prophet Ibrahim AS. The story of his people and the punishment they were afflicted with was a shocking incident in the life of Ibrahim AS. Lut AS, as you will recall, left Ur with Ibrahim AS and settled in Palestine.

Nothing authoritative is known of Lut’s AS earlier life. What is evident is that as some point after his settling, Allah appointed him as prophet to communities on the shore of what is now the Dead Sea, at a distance of 24 hours’ journey from Ibrahim’s AS home.

Lut AS went to the city of Sodom after Ibrahim AS had asked him to do so. It was the main city of that region with suburbs and satellite villages, prosperous and well-populated. In the region where Lut AS settled, there were 5 cities, referred to in the Qur’an as Al-Mu’tafikat (Qur’an 9:70; 53:53, 69:9), meaning “the Overturned Cities”. Sodom was the largest of these.

Quiz Time (35) “...His face handsome, slim in form, very intelligent, elegant and good looking..." Who was that Sahabiya described this?

Ans: Umm Ma'bad al-Khuza'iyya(R.a)

Physical and Moral Traits of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

Everything authentically narrated concerning the Prophet's complexion and the rest of his physical features is also included in the definition of sunnah. Umm Ma'bad described what she saw of the great Prophet (PBUH).

She replied. 'Describe him to me (Husband); I think he is that man the Quraysh are looking for,' he told her.

"She replied, 'I saw him to be a man of evident cleanliness, fine in character, his face handsome, slim in form, his head not too small, elegant and good looking, his eyes large and black, his eyebrows long, his voice deep, very intelligent, his eyelids brown, his brows high and arched, his hair in plaits, his neck long and his beard thick. He gave an impression of dignity when silent and of high intelligence when he talked. His logic was impressive, he was decisive, not trivial, not trite, his ideas like pearls moving on their string. He seemed the most splendid and fine looking man from a distance and the very best of all from close-by, medium in height, the eye not finding him too tall nor too short. A tree-branch, as it were, between two others, but he was the finest-looking of the three, the best proportioned. He was the cenb-e of his companions' attention. When he spoke, they listened well, and if he ordered, they hurried to obey, a man well helped, well served, never sullen, never refuted.'

Al-Bayhaqi stated, "The Hafiz Abu Abdullah informed us, as did Abu Bakr Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qadi, both of whom said, 'Aha al-'Ahbas al-Asamm related to us, quoting al-Hasan h. Mukrim, Aba Ahmad Bishr b. Muhammad al-Sukkari, quoting 'Abd al-Malik b. Wahb al-Mudhhiji, quoting Abjar b. al-Sabah, from Abn Ma'bad al-Khuzai.
