QuizTime (122): For which crime, Sahaba agreed eighty lashes as a punishment for one who commits?

QuizTime (122): For which crime, Sahaba agreed eighty lashes as a punishment for one who commits?

Ans:  Wine(Alcohol).

“When Walid bin `Uqbah was brought to `Uthman, they had testified against him. He said to 'Ali: 'You are close to your uncle's son, so carry out the legal punishment on him.' So 'Ali whipped him. He said: 'The Messenger of Allah () gave forty lashes, and Abu Bakr gave forty lashes, and 'Umar gave eighty all are Sunnah.'”[Sunna Ibn Maja Hadith 2571]

“The Messenger of Allah () used to beat (offenders) for drinking wine with sandals and date-palm stalks.”[Sunna ibn Maja Hadith 2570]

Comments:

a. There is no fixed range of the maximum or minimum punishment for drinking wine, that is why there is the possibility of awarding a greater or lesser punishment. The range fixed by 'Umar with the consultation of the Companion is eighty lashes and there should be no change in it.

b. In other punishments the offender is whipped, but in this punishment he can be beaten with sandals or sticks.

c. The Companion of the Prophet agreed upon the punishment of eighty lashes, so eighty lashes is the correct punishment.

[Sunna ibn Maja vol 3 page 473]

QuizTime(121): Give the name of the shortest surah of the Qur’aan?

QuizTime(121): Give the name of the shortest surah of the Qur’aan?

Ans: Surah 108. Al-Kauthar, the shortest surah in the Qur'an which contain 3 small verses. SubhanAllah.

"1. Verily, We have granted you Al-Kawthar. 2. Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice. 3. For he who hates you, he will be cut off.)

Brief explanation:

Muslim, Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i, all recorded from Anas that he said, "While we were with the Messenger of Allah in the Masjid, he dozed off into a slumber. Then he lifted his head smiling. We said, `O Messenger of Allah! What has caused you to laugh' He said,(Verily, a Surah was just revealed to me.) Then he recited.

1) Verily, We have granted you Al-Kawthar:

(Verily, it is a river that my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, has promised me and it has abundant goodness. Ibn `Abbas said about Al-Kawthar, "It is the good which Allah gave to him (the Prophet).''

2) (Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice.):

meaning, `just as We have given you the abundant goodness in this life and the Hereafter -- and from that is the river that has been described previously -- then make your obligatory and optional prayer, and your sacrifice (of animals) solely and sincerely for your Lord.

3) (For he who hates you, he will be cut off.):

Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid, Sa`id bin Jubayr and Qatadah all said, "This Ayah was revealed about Al-`As bin Wa'il. Whenever the Messenger of Allah would be mentioned (in his presence) he would say, `Leave him, for indeed he is a man who is cut off having no descendants. So when he dies he will not be remembered.' Therefore, Allah revealed this Surah.'' Shamir bin `Atiyah said, "This Surah was revealed concerning `Uqbah bin Abi Mu`ayt.'' Ibn `Abbas and `Ikrimah have both said, "This Surah was revealed about Ka`b bin Al-Ashraf and a group of the disbelievers of the Quraysh.'' Al-Bazzar recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, "Ka`b bin Al-Ashraf came to Makkah and the Quraysh said to him, `You are the leader of them (the people). What do you think about this worthless man who is cut off from his people He claims that he is better than us while we are the people of the place of pilgrimage, the people of custodianship (of the Ka`bah), and the people who supply water to the pilgrims.' He replied, `You all are better than him.' So Allah revealed...

QuizTime (120): Who was that Sahabi requested to offer two units of Salah before his execution done by Quraysh in Makkah ?

QuizTime (120): Who was that Sahabi requested to offer two units of Salah before his execution done by Quraysh  in Makkah ?

Ans: Khubayb bin 'Adiyy (R.a)

The sons of Al-Harith the infidel bought Khubayb(r.a)  in order to execute him and thereby avenge their father's death. They kept him captive until they decided when the execution would take place. While he (r.a)   was held captive, he borrowed a razor from one of the daughters of Al-Harith, as in the following narration:

Abu Hurayrah (r.a)   narrated: “The daughter of Al-Harith said: 'When the people gathered (to execute Khubayb) he borrowed a razor from me so that he could shave his pubic hair. He also took a son of mine who had come to him while I was unaware. I saw him placing my son on his thigh while the razor was in his hand. I was so terrified that Khubayb noticed this from my face. He said: 'Are you afraid that I will kill him? No! I would never do so.' I swear by Allah that I have never seen a finer prisoner than Khubayb. I swear by Allah that I once saw him eating of a bunch of grapes that was in his hand whilst he was in iron chains, and there was no fruit at that time in Makkah – it was nothing except provision provided by Allah to him. When they took him outside the Sanctuary (of Makkah) to kill him, Khubayb requested them to allow him to offer two Rak’ahs (units of prayer).

They gave him permission, and he did so. Then, he said to them: 'Had I not feared that you would think that I was afraid (of being executed), I would have prolonged the prayer. O Allah! Kill them all, without exception.' Then ‘Uqbah the son of Al-Harith got up and executed him. Therefore, it was Khubayb who set the tradition for any Muslim sentenced to death in captivity to offer a two-Rak'ah prayer (before being executed). Later on, when some infidels of the Quraysh were informed that 'Asim had been killed, they sent some people to fetch a part of his body (his head) by which he would be recognisable. (This was because) 'Asim had killed one of their chiefs on the day (of the battle) of Badr. However, a swarm of wasps resembling a shady cloud were sent to hover over ‘Asim and protect him from their messenger, and thus they could not cut off anything from his flesh.'” [Al-Bukhari]

QuizTime (119): Prophet Muhammed(pbuh) said "...the angels would have cut him piece by piece.” Who was He?

QuizTime (119): Prophet Muhammed(pbuh) said "...the angels would have cut him piece by piece.” Who was He?

Ans: Amr ibn Hishām, also called Abu al-Hakam or Abū Jahl.

Evidence of the angels guarding the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) by the command of Allah is to be seen in another incident with Abu Jahl, which was reported by Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) in his Saheeh from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

Abu Jahl asked, “Does Muhammad rub his face in the dust (i.e. does he prostrate when he prays at the K’abah) when he is among you?” He was told, “Yes.” He said, “By al-Laat and al-‘Uzza, if I see him doing that, I will step on his neck or I will rub his face in the dust.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came and prayed. He (Abu Jahl) had claimed that he would step on his neck, but suddenly all they saw was that he was running away, raising his hands to protect himself.

It was said to him, “What is the matter with you?” He said, “There is a ditch of fire and terror and wings between me and him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If he had come near me, the angels would have snatched him piece by piece.”

Then Allah revealed the words (interpretation of the meaning):

“Nay! Verily, man does transgress (in disbelief and evil deeds). Because he considers himself self-sufficient. Surely, unto your Lord is the return. Have you (O Muhammad) seen him (i.e. Abu Jahl) who prevents A slave (Muhammad) when he prays? Tell me if he (Muhammad) is on the guidance (of Allah) Or enjoins piety? Tell me if he (Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Quran) and turns away? Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)? Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock — A lying, sinful forelock! Then let him call upon his council (of helpers). We will call out the guards of Hell (to deal with him)! Nay! (O Muhammad)! Do not obey him (Abu Jahl).” [96:6-19]

QuizTime(118): Which Sahaba(r.a) opened the gates of “Garden of Death” in Battle of Al-Yamamah?

QuizTime(118): Which Sahaba(r.a) opened the gates of “Garden of Death” in Battle of Al-Yamamah?

Ans: Al-Baraa ibn Malik al-Ansari(R.a)

“Al-Baraa' cutting through the enemy of Allah that the tide of battle turned against Musaylimah and his forces. They sought refuge in a garden which later became known in history as The Garden of Death because of the many killed there on that day. The garden was surrounded by high walls. Musaylamah and thousands of his men entered and closed the gates behind them and fortified themselves.

From their new positions they began to rain down arrows on the Muslims.

The valiant Baraa went forward and addressed his company, "Put me on a shield. Raise the shield on spears and hurl me into the garden near the gate. Either I shall die a martyr or I shall open the gate for you."

The thin and wiry al-Baraa was soon sitting on a shield. A number of spears raised the shield and he was thrown into the Garden of Death amongst the multitude of Musaylamah's men. He descended on them like a thunderbolt and continued to fight them in front of the gate. Many fell to his sword and he himself sustained numerous wounds before he could open the gate.

The Muslims charged into the Garden of Death through the gates and over the walls. Fighting was bitter and at close quarters and hundreds were killed. Finally the Muslims came upon Musaylamah and he was killed.

QuizTime(117): One who is in a state of ihraam [for Hajj and ‘Umrah] permissible to kill any Animal?

QuizTime(117): One who is in a state of ihraam [for Hajj and ‘Umrah] permissible to kill any Animal?

Ans: Permissible to kill “kites, crows, mice/rats, mad dogs & Snakes”.

I heard Allah's Messenger () as saying: Four are the vicious (birds, beasts and reptiles) which should be killed in the state of Ihram or otherwise: kite (and vulture), crow, rat, and the voracious dog. I (one of the narrators, `Ubaidullah b. Miqsam) said to Qasim (the other narrator who heard it from `A'isha): What about the snake? He said: Let it be killed with disgrace.

[Sahi Muslim Hadith 2717]

Five are the harmful things which should be killed in the state of Ihram or otherwise: snake, speckled crow. rat. voracious dog, and kite.

[Sahi Muslim Hadith 2718]

1)     Rat/mice:

Mice and rats are harmful creatures, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained:

Ibn ‘Abbaas said: a mouse (or rat) came and started dragging the wick (of the lamp). It threw it in front of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), onto the mat on which he was sitting, and it burnt a hole the size of a dirham. He said, “When you go to sleep, extinguish your lamps, for the Shaytaan will tell creatures like this to do something like this so that you will be burned.”

Narrated by Abu Dawood, 5427.

The mice or rats that may live in people’s houses are among the harmful creatures or vermin (fuwaysiqah) which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded us to kill in all situations, whether we are in ihraam or not. The root of the word fuwaysiqah (fasaqa) means to deviate from the right way and to do harm; hence a sinner is described as “faasiq”, and these animals are called fawaasiq, as a metaphor for their evil nature; or it was said that it is because it is not haraam to kill them, whether one is in ihraam or not, for they have no sanctity or protection in any circumstances. Al-Tahaawi narrated in Ahkaam al-Qur’aan with his isnaad from Yazeed ibn Abu Nu’aym that he [Yazeed] asked Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri why mice/rats were called fuwaysiqah. He said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) woke up one night and saw that a mouse/rat had taken the wick of the lamp to burn down the house of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), so he got up and killed it, and said that it was permissible to kill them whether one is in ihraam or not. This was mentioned by al-‘Allaamah al-Dumayri.

2)     Crows:

Many scholars are of the view that the crow that is desirable to kill is the white-bellied crow that eats dead animals – and not all kinds of crows, such as the one that eats plants and the like – contrary to the Maaliki School, who are of the view that all kinds of crows are Fawaasiq.

3)     Scorpion:

"The Prophet (saw) was stung by a scorpion while he was performing prayer, and he said: 'May Allah curse the scorpion, for it does not spare anyone, whether he is praying or not. Kill them whether you are in Ihram or not.'" In Al-Hill (outside the sacred precincts of Makkah) or Al-Haram (the sacred precincts or Makkah). Sahih

[Sunna Ibn Maja 1246]

One undeniable fact is that scorpions are venomous. Their venom is the cause of widespread fear and at the same time, fascination. Most species possess a sting comparable to that of a bee sting, but a few scorpion species have a venomous sting that can be lethal to humans. Scorpion venom is a neurotoxin, a chemical that affects the nervous system, ultimately killing or paralyzing their prey.

4)     Mad Dogs:

Dogs are of two types: those which it is Sunnah to kill and those which are not to be killed. As for those which it is Sunnah to kill, it is the black dog because it is a devil, and the vicious dog because it is harmful. All other dogs are not to be killed.

If these dogs are attacking the sheep and killing and eating some of them, then these are harmful dogs whose harm is to be warded off even if that is by killing them; rather they should be killed because of the mischief that they are causing. Al-Bukhaari (1829) and Muslim (1198) narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: “There are four (creatures), all of which are vermin and may be killed inside the sanctuary and outside: kites, crows, rats and vicious dogs.”

5)     Snake:

The Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) enjoined the killing of snakes, and this is general in meaning and applies to all kinds of snakes, in any place. But if the snake is inside the house, it should not be killed until it has been warned three times; that is because of the possibility that it may be a jinn. Then if it appears after that, it may be killed.

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) address the people from the minbar, saying: “Kill snakes.”

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar said: After that, I would not leave any snake that I saw but I would kill it.

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (3299) and Muslim (3233)

Abu Dawood (5249) narrated that Ibn Mas‘ood said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Kill all the snakes, and whoever fears their revenge does not belong to me.”

QuizTime(116) : On which day Adam A.S was created?

QuizTime(116) : On which day Adam A.S was created?

Ans: Friday(Jummah)

It was narrated from Aws ibn Aws that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best of your days is Friday. On that day Adam (peace be upon him) was created; on that day he died; on that day the Trumpet will be blown and on that day all of creation will swoon. So send a great deal of blessings upon me, for your blessings will be shown to me.” They said, “O Messenger of Allaah, how will our blessings upon you be shown to you when you have turned to dust?” He said, “Allaah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets, peace be upon them.”

Narrated by Abu Dawood, 1047; classed as saheeh by Ibn al-Qayyim in his comments on Sunan Abi Dawood, 4/273; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 925.

Importance of Friday in Islam.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise and on it he was expelled therefrom.”

Narrated by Muslim, 1410.

This hadeeth includes some of the reasons why Friday is regarded as special.

Al-Nawawi said:

Al-Qaadi ‘Iyaad said: The apparent meaning is that these virtues do not mean that Friday is regarded as special because Adam was expelled on a Friday and the Hour will begin on a Friday. Rather it is meant to explain what momentous events took place and will take place on this day, so that people will make the most of this day to do righteous deeds, so as to attain the mercy of Allaah and ward off His punishment. This is the view of al-Qaadi. Abu Bakr ibn al-‘Arabi said in his book al-Ahwadhi fi Sharh al-Tirmidhi: All of these events are good and add to the virtue of Friday. The expulsion of Adam from Paradise is the reason why his offspring and the Messengers, the Prophets, the righteous and the awliya’ exist. He was not expelled from it as such, but rather it was for a purpose, then he will return to it. With regard to the Hour beginning on a Friday, the reason is so that the reward may be hastened for the Prophets, believers in truth, awliya’ and others, and their honour and high status may be made manifest. This hadeeth points to the virtues of Friday and its high status in relation to the other days.

It was narrated that Abu Lubaabah ibn ‘Abd al-Mundhir said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Friday is the master of days, and the greatest of them before Allaah. It is greater before Allaah than the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr. It has five characteristics: on this day Allaah created Adam, on it He sent Adam down to the earth, on it Allaah caused Adam to die, on it there is a time when a person does not ask Allaah for anything but He gives it to him, so long as he does not ask for anything haraam, and on it the Hour will begin. There is no angel who is close to Allaah, no heaven, no earth, no wind, no mountain and no sea that does not fear Friday.”

Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 1084; classed as hasan by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 2279

Al-Sanadi said:

“They fear Friday” means they fear the onset of the Hour. This indicates that all created beings are aware of the days and they know that the Day of Resurrection will come on a Friday.

The virtues of this day include the following:

1 – On it is Salaat al-Jumu’ah (Friday prayer), which is the best of prayer.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salaah (prayer) on Friday (Jumu‘ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allaah [Jumu‘ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salaah (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing). That is better for you if you did but know!”

[al-Jumu’ah 62:9]

Muslim (233) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The five daily prayers and from one Jumu’ah to the next is an expiation for whatever sins come in between them, so long as one does not commit a major sin.”

2 – Praying Fajr in congregation on Fridays is the best prayer that the Muslim can pray during the week.

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best prayer before Allaah is Fajr prayer on Friday in congregation.”

Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1119

One of the special features of Fajr prayer on Friday is that it is Sunnah to recite Soorat al-Sajdah in the first rak’ah and Soorat al-Insaan in the second.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to recite in Fajr prayer in Fridays Alif-Laam-Meem Tanzeel (Soorat al-Sajdah) in the first rak’ah and Hal ata ‘ala’l-insaan heenun min al-dahr lam yakun shay’an madhkooran (Soorat al-Insaan) in the second.

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 851; Muslim, 880.

Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said:

It was said that the reason why these two soorahs are recited is because they mention the creation of Adam and what will happen on the Day of Resurrection, because that will come to pass on a Friday.

3 – Whoever dies during the day or night of Friday, Allaah will protect him from the trial of the grave.

It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is no Muslim who dies during the day of Friday or the night of Friday but Allaah will protect him from the trial of the grave.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1074; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Ahkaam al-Janaa’iz, p. 49, 50

These are some of the virtues of Friday. We ask Allaah to help us to please Him.

Allah knows the best.
