QuizTime (140): Bani Israel temporarily worshiped what statue after they left Egypt?

Ans: CALF

"Then he took out (of the fire) for them a statue of a CALF which seemed to low. They said: "This is your ilah (god), and the ilah (god) of Musa (Moses), but [Musa (Moses)] has forgotten (his god).'"

[Al-Qur'an ch 20 Verse 88]

"Then they worshipped the calf even after clear proofs, evidences, and signs had come to them. (Even) so We forgave them. And We gave Moosa (Moses) a clear proof of authority”

[an-Nisa’ 4:153].

About the Calf several places mentioned in the Qur'an [Ch 2 Verse 51,54,92,93,Ch 7 Verse 148,150,152, Ch 20 Verse 86,91,96]

Moses had been gone for forty days and his people were becoming restless, for they did not know that Allah had extended his time by a further ten days. Samiri, a man who was inclined towards evil, suggested that they find themselves another guide, as Moses had broken his promise. He said to them: "In order to find true guidance, you need a god, and I shall provide one for you."

So he collected all their gold jewelry, dug a hole in which he placed the lot, and lit a huge fire to melt it down. During the casting, he threw a handful of dust, making actions like a magician's to impress the ignorant. From the molten metal he fashioned a golden calf. It was hollow, and the wind passing through it produced a sound. Since superstition was imbedded in their past, they quickly linked the strange sound to something supernatural, as if it were a living god.

SAMIRI:

Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {Mûsa (Moses) said: "Then go away! And verily, your (punishment) in this life will be that you will say: "Touch me not (i.e. you will live alone exiled away from mankind); …} [20: 97].

The verse is reporting Musa 's saying to Samiri when he made a statue of a calf for Bani Israel and claimed that it was their god. Thus, his punishment in this life was to say: 'Touch me not'

Imam Qurtubi said: 'he was afflicted by insinuation and the origin of insinuation is from that time' . Qatadah said: 'such people still exist, they say to others "do not touch us"; if a person touched one of them both became feverish at same time' . It is probable that the diseases that struck Samiri were insinuation or fever. But they do not afflict him unless he touches somebody else or somebody else touches him.

Allah knows the best.
