QuizTime (40): Which Sahabhi didn't stopped Qur'an recitation even after He was shot by 2 arrows by enemies in a valley at night?

QuizTime (40): Which Sahabhi didn't stopped Qur'an recitation even after He was shot by 2 arrows by enemies in a valley at night?

Ans: Abbad Ibn Bishr (RA)

Abbad (RA) accompanied the Prophet {saws} in all his military expeditions, and in each one he performed in a way befitting the reciter of the Qur'an.

Meanwhile, the Muslims were busy making their camp and getting their camels to kneel so they could tie them up for the night. Then the Prophet, {saws}, asked: "Who is going to stand guard over us tonight?"

Abbad ibn Bishr and Ammar ibn Yasir got up together and volunteered. They had been made brothers by the Prophet {saws}, when the Mhuhajirun (emigrants) had first gone to Madina. When they went and took up their position at the entrance to the ravine, Abbad ibn Bishr said to his brother Ammar ibn Yasir: "which half of the night do you prefer to sleep in, the first or the last?" "I will sleep for the first half," said Ammar and he lied down to sleep a few paces away from Abbad.

The night was clear, calm and peaceful. Every star, tree and rock seemed to give praise and glory to its Lord, and the heart of Abbad longed to share in the worship by reciting the Qur'an while he was offering Salah, (prayer) and thus he enjoyed the pleasure of reciting along with that of the ceremony of worship.

He faced the Qiblah (direction for prayer), started the prayer, and then began to recite from Qur'an Surah (chapter) of Kahf, in his sweet, emotional voice. Like one swimming in an ocean of divine light, he seemed to be overcome by the spirituality of his setting. Engrossed in worship, he did not notice a man who had appeared on the scene and was rapidly moving towards him. When the man saw Abbad in Bishr standing at the entrance to the ravine, he knew that the Prophet {saws}, and his Companions were camped inside and that this person was their watchman.

Drawing an arrow from his quiver, he set it in his bow, took aim, and shot it into Abbad ibn Bishr, who simply pulled it out of his body and continued his worship! The man shot him again and hit him, but Abbad only pulled this arrow out, as well; so the man shot him a third time. Abbad pulled the arrow out again, but this time crawled over to his friend and awakened him, saying: "Get up, for I have been seriously wounded."

When the man realized that there were two people keeping guard, he fled. Ammar took a good look at Abbad, and realized that he was bleeding heavily from three wounds, so he exclaimed: "Glory be to Allah, and why did you not awaken me as soon as you were hit the first time?" "I was in the middle of reciting a Surah from the Qur'an," answered Abbad, "and I did not wish to interrupt my reciting in the middle, before I finished. I swear by Allah, if I had not feared that I would leave the army unguarded after the Messenger of Allah {saws}, had commanded me to keep watch, I would have preferred death to being interrupted!

QuizTime(39) : Which Prophet of Allah killed Goliath ?

QuizTime(39) : Which Prophet of Allah killed Goliath ?

Ans: Dawood(peace be upon him).

So they defeated them by permission of Allah, and David killed Goliath(Jalut) and Allah gave him the kingship and prophethood and taught him from that which He willed.
[Al-Qur'an ch 2 Verse 251]

David (pbuh) and Goliath Fight

The king dressed David in battle armor and handed him a sword, but David was not used to wearing battle dress. He felt uncomfortable in it, and it obstructed his movements. He removed the armor, then collected a few pebbles and filled his leather pouch with them. He slung it over his shoulder next to his sling. With his wooden staff in hand, he began to walk towards the enemy. Saul was worried and asked him how on earth, with a sling and a couple of stones was he going to defend himself against the giant? David replied: "Allah Who protected me from the claws of the bear and the fangs of the lion will certainly protect me from this brute!"

When Goliath set eyes on the lean young man who looked like a boy, he laughed loudly and roared: "Are you out to play war with one of your playmates, or are you tired of your life? I will simply cut off your head with one swipe of my sword!" David shouted back: "You may have armor, shield, and sword, but I face you in the name of Allah, the Lord of the Israelites, Whose laws you have mocked. Today you will see that it is not the sword that kills but the will and power of Allah!"

So saying, he took his sling and placed in it a pebble from his pouch. He swung and aimed it at Goliath. The pebble shot from the whirling sling with the speed of an arrow and hit Goliath's head with great force. Blood gushed out, and Goliath thumped to the ground, lifeless, before he had a chance to draw his sword. When the rest of his men saw their mighty hero slain, they took to their heels. The Israelites followed in hot pursuit, taking revenge for their years of suffering at the hands of their enemy, killing every soldier they could lay hands on. In this battle the Israelites regained the glory and honor that had been lost for a long time.

David became a hero overnight. Saul kept his word and married his daughter Michal (Miqel) to the young warrior and took him under his wing as one of his chief advisors.

Quiz time(38): Which Prophet of Allah called his own wife, "My Sister" ?

QuizTime(38): Which Prophet of Allah called his own wife, "My Sister" ?

Ans:  Ibrahim(pbuh) called his Wife Sarah(May Allah mercy be upon her) as Sister in Islam.

The Hadith as narrated in the book of Muslim is as follows:

"Ibn Sirin narrates from Abu Hurayra that said, "Ibrahim, (pbuh), never lied except three times, two were for the sake of God, the Mighty, when He said, 'I am sick' and 'The biggest of them did it.' And one was about Sareh. He went by the land of one of the tyrants with Sareh, who was very beautiful. He said to Sareh 'This is a tyrant person, if he knows that you are my wife he will overcome me (kill me) because of you. So if he asked you tell him that you are my sister. You are in deed my sister in Islam, and I do not know any Muslims on the face of earth except myself and you." ... (Muslim, 2371).

According to the Hadith, Ibrahim (pbuh) did not tell the truth in three occasions:

1. When he said he was Saqeem, which can be translated as weak or ill (37:89).

2. When he said that the big idol had destructed the other idols (21:63).

3. When he advised Sarah to say she was his sister when she met the tyrant.

By stretching the meaning of lie one may consider the above three as lies, however none of them really go under that meaning of lie that is condemned.

A review of verses, Qur’an ch 6 Verses 76-79 shows that Ibrahim (pbuh) had a very unique and effective approach in preaching. He would orchestrate a situation in order to illustrate the false beliefs of his people and let them come to conclusions themselves. Instances one and two above are also part of this:

1) Ibrahim says he is ill (or weak) to excuse himself from the ceremony that people were at, in order to have an opportunity to break the idols. When some one is not in a mood to attend a ceremony he can simply say that he is not feeling well meaning that his mood is not befitting with the ceremony. This is not saying the truth in an exact way but is also not a total lie.

2) In the second instance Ibrahim (pbuh) says something that is not true (i.e. the big idol destructing the other ones), but everyone else also knows that it is not true. He knows that everyone knows this is not true and everyone knows that he knows that no one considers this to be true! This is not a lie. This is a sarcastic and at the same time a powerful way of showing people how baseless and
ridiculous their belief is.

3) As for the third instance, the wording of the Hadith itself suggests that Ibrahim (pbuh) intended the truth, but not all the truth and not the exact truth. Sareh was in deed his sister in Islam (1). All that happens is that it was not revealed that here 'sister' does not mean literal sister, and it was not revealed that she was also his wife. There are times that we should be ready to sacrifice our lives for the sake of the truth and in these times we are not to lie about ourselves and our beliefs. However there are also life threatening situations where no sacrifice is needed or even applicable. I do not think that the Almighty expects us to say the truth and then die as the result in these situations. Verse 16:106 of the Qur'an even allows denying the faith (while holding it in the heart) if that  can save one's life (like the story of Ammar ibn Yasir).

According to some scholars, what was intended by lying in those situations was only to use equivocations (Tawriyah, i.e. saying something which has more than one meaning and intending a meaning different from what the listener is likely to understand) rather than explicit lies. The scholars stated that attributing lies to Ibrahim (A.S.) in this context, does not mean explicit lying.

QuizTime(37): Which tyrant King & his soldiers were punished/killed by mosquitoes.

QuizTime(37): Which tyrant King & his soldiers were punished/killed by mosquitoes.

Ans: Nimrood

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The books of Tafseer (interpretation of the Quran) and history reported that the death of Nimrood and his soldiers was caused by mosquitoes. Nimrood died because of a mosquito that entered into his nostrils and reached his brain, and this caused him to start hitting his head for a long time until he died.

The Tafseer of Muhammad al-Kittaani Al-Idreesi reads, “Nimrood, the dictator and tyrant who considered himself to be god, the disbeliever, tried to inflict harm upon Ibraaheem (Abraham), but Allaah gave a sweeping victory to Ibraaheem as Allaah hit Nimrood and his people with the smallest and most despicable creation. He sent mosquitoes upon them; a mosquito would enter their ears, and then their nostrils, and it would keep moving until it reached their brain; as a result, they died.”

Also, At-Tafseer Al-Waseet authored by Az-Zuhayli reads:

“It was reported that when Ibraaheem may Allaah exalt his mention came out of the fire safe and sound, he was brought to Nimrood, and the latter spoke to him and declared his insistence on disbelief, and he said to Ibraaheem, 'O Ibraaheem, where are the soldiers of your Lord whom you claim?' Ibraaheem said to him, 'Allaah will show you the work of the weakest and most vulnerable of His soldiers;' so Allaah sent down a cloud of mosquitoes on Nimrood and his people, and the mosquitoes ate them all. A mosquito entered the head of Nimrood, and he had his head hit with sticks and the like, and he was tortured with this mosquito for so long, and he died because of it.”

For more information on this tyrant with Ibraaheem may Allaah exalt his mention you may refer to Al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah authored by Ibn Katheer may Allaah have mercy upon him and other books.

Quiz time(36): Who was that Man who believed on Ibrahim(Pbuh) faith and later became prophet after him ?

Quiz time(36): Who was that Man who believed on Ibrahim(Pbuh) faith and later became prophet after him ?

Ans: Prophet Lut (Peace be upon him).

“And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, "Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."[Al-Qur’an ch 29 Verse 26]

“Allah tells us that Lut believed in Ibrahim. It was said that he was the son of Ibrahim's brother, and that his name was Lut bin Haran bin Azar. None of Ibrahim's people believed in Ibrahim besides Lut and Sarah the wife of Ibrahim”. [Tafsir ibn Kathir]

Ibrahim (Pbuh) continued calling people to believe in Allah, exerting a great effort to guide his people to the right path. He tried every possible means to convince them. However in spite of his love and care for the people, they did not listened to him and deserted him. Only one woman and one man of his people shared his belief in Allah. The woman was named Sarah who later became his wife while the man was Lut who later became a prophet after him.

Prophet Lut AS was the nephew of the Prophet Ibrahim AS. The story of his people and the punishment they were afflicted with was a shocking incident in the life of Ibrahim AS. Lut AS, as you will recall, left Ur with Ibrahim AS and settled in Palestine.

Nothing authoritative is known of Lut’s AS earlier life. What is evident is that as some point after his settling, Allah appointed him as prophet to communities on the shore of what is now the Dead Sea, at a distance of 24 hours’ journey from Ibrahim’s AS home.

Lut AS went to the city of Sodom after Ibrahim AS had asked him to do so. It was the main city of that region with suburbs and satellite villages, prosperous and well-populated. In the region where Lut AS settled, there were 5 cities, referred to in the Qur’an as Al-Mu’tafikat (Qur’an 9:70; 53:53, 69:9), meaning “the Overturned Cities”. Sodom was the largest of these.

Quiz Time (35) “...His face handsome, slim in form, very intelligent, elegant and good looking..." Who was that Sahabiya described this?

Ans: Umm Ma'bad al-Khuza'iyya(R.a)

Physical and Moral Traits of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

Everything authentically narrated concerning the Prophet's complexion and the rest of his physical features is also included in the definition of sunnah. Umm Ma'bad described what she saw of the great Prophet (PBUH).

She replied. 'Describe him to me (Husband); I think he is that man the Quraysh are looking for,' he told her.

"She replied, 'I saw him to be a man of evident cleanliness, fine in character, his face handsome, slim in form, his head not too small, elegant and good looking, his eyes large and black, his eyebrows long, his voice deep, very intelligent, his eyelids brown, his brows high and arched, his hair in plaits, his neck long and his beard thick. He gave an impression of dignity when silent and of high intelligence when he talked. His logic was impressive, he was decisive, not trivial, not trite, his ideas like pearls moving on their string. He seemed the most splendid and fine looking man from a distance and the very best of all from close-by, medium in height, the eye not finding him too tall nor too short. A tree-branch, as it were, between two others, but he was the finest-looking of the three, the best proportioned. He was the cenb-e of his companions' attention. When he spoke, they listened well, and if he ordered, they hurried to obey, a man well helped, well served, never sullen, never refuted.'

Al-Bayhaqi stated, "The Hafiz Abu Abdullah informed us, as did Abu Bakr Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qadi, both of whom said, 'Aha al-'Ahbas al-Asamm related to us, quoting al-Hasan h. Mukrim, Aba Ahmad Bishr b. Muhammad al-Sukkari, quoting 'Abd al-Malik b. Wahb al-Mudhhiji, quoting Abjar b. al-Sabah, from Abn Ma'bad al-Khuzai.

QuizTime(34): Who built the first Islamic Navy?

QuizTime(34): Who built the first Islamic Navy?

Ans: Uthman Ibn Affan (RA)

Must read:

During the last days of ‘Umar’s Caliphate, Mu'awiyah may Allah be pleased with him had sought permission to invade Cyprus from the Syrian coast. However, ‘Umar may Allah be pleased with him had hesitated in giving permission for such a campaign and the matter remained undecided until he passed away. ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan may Allah be pleased with him permitted the naval attack on condition that nobody was forced to take part in the adventure. Inspired by the efforts of Mu'awiyah, a party agreed to invade Cyprus.

The party included Abu Tharr Al-Ghifari, Abud-Dardaa', Shaddad bin ‘Aws, ‘Ubadah bin As-Samit and his wife Umm Haram bint Milhan may Allah be pleased with them. ‘Abdullah bin Qays may Allah be pleased with him was made the commander of the detachment, which left for Cyprus by boat. When Constantine escaped from Alexandria, he had taken refuge in Cyprus. An Islamic naval force chased him by boats from Egypt and reached Cyprus. And this, a fresh naval detachment from Syria also descended on the coast of Cyprus. Constantine could not withstand the attack and fled to Constantinople with great difficulty, and finally succumbed to death.

However, according to other sources, frustrated by his successive defeats, some people killed him in his bathroom. Thus Cyprus easily fell to the Muslims. Mu'awiyah may Allah be pleased with him also arrived in Cyprus with a detachment. After finishing his job in Cyprus he sailed to Rhodes. The conquests of Cyprus and Rhodes opened the door for Muslim campaigns against Constantinople and other countries of the region. These events took place at the end of 28 AH or at the beginning of 29 AH.

Its was advice/wisdom of Mu'awiyah(r.a) to build a naval force, first it was rejected by the Umar(r.a) then During Uthman(r.a) reign He gave permission to build a naval force. Untimely Uthman(r.a) as khalifa who give the permission & build first Islamic naval force. May Allah please with them. Ameen.

QuizTime(33): Iblis - angel or jinn? Why Qur'an counted him among the angels in many places? Q: ch 2 Verses 34.

QuizTime(33): Iblis - angel or jinn? Why Qur'an counted him among the angels in many places? Q: ch 2 Verses 34.

Ans: 1) Iblis is a Jin and 2) Arabic Rule Of Tagleeb need to apply to understand why Allah counted Jin(Iblis) among the Angels.

1. Incidence of Iblis and Angels mentioned in the Qur’an

The story of Adam and Iblis is mentioned in the Qur’an in various places in which Allah (swt) says, "We said to the angels bow down to Adam: and they bowed down: not so Iblis".

This is mentioned in:

Surah Al Baqarah chapter 2 verse 34

Surah Al ‘Araf chapter 7 verse 11

Surah Al Hijr chapter 15 verses 28-31

Surah Al Isra chapter 17 verse 61

Surah Ta Ha chapter 20 verse 116

Surah Sad chapter 38 verses 71-74

But in Surah Al Kahf chapter 18 verse 50 the Qur’an says:

"Behold! We said to the angels, "Bow down to Adam." they bowed down except Iblis He was one of the Jinns." [Al-Qur’an 18:50]

2. Arabic Rule Of Tagleeb

The English translation of the first part of the verse ‘We said to the angels bow down to Adam: they bowed down except Iblis’, gives us the impression that Iblis was an angel. The Qur’an was revealed in Arabic. In Arabic grammar there is a rule known as Tagleeb, according to which, if the majority is addressed, even the minority is included. If for example, I address a class containing 100 students of whom 99 are boys and one is a girl, and if I say in Arabic that the boys should stand up, it includes the girl as well. I need not mention her seperately.

Similarly in the Qur’an, when Allah addressed the angels, even Iblis was present, but it is not required that he be mentioned separately. Therefore according to that sentence Iblis may be an angel or may not be an angel, but we come to know from Surah Al Kahf chapter 18 verse 50 that Iblis was a Jinn. No where does the Qur’an say Iblis was an angel. Therefore there is no contradiction in the Qur’an.

3. Jinns have free will and can disobey Allah

Secondly, Jinns have a free will and may or may not obey Allah, but angels have no free will and always obey Allah. Therefore the question of an angel disobeying Allah does not arise. This further supplements that Iblis was a Jinn and not an angel.

IBLIS WAS PIOUS AND KEEPERS OF PRADISE ETC…(ALL UNRELIABLE SOURCE)

Some reports which are not saheeh (authentic) have been narrated from some of the salaf (pious predecessors), suggesting that Iblees was the best of the angels, that he was one of the keepers of Paradise, etc. Imam Ibn Kathir commented on this by saying:

Many reports to this effect have been narrated from the salaf, but most of them come from the Israiliyyat (reports narrated from Jewish sources) which were narrated to be examined. Allah knows best about the true status of many of them. There are some which can be rejected out of hand because they go against the truth that we have before us. In the Quran there is sufficient information so that we have no need for earlier reports, because hardly any of them are free from alterations, additions and subtractions, and many things have been fabricated in them. The earlier nations did not have scholars to examine these reports and eliminate those which are not sound, as this ummah (nation) has with its imams (religious leaders) and scholars who have great knowledge and are pious and righteous, who wrote down the hadeeth and examined them and showed what is sound and what is not, and what is fabricated, identifying the fabricators, liars and those narrators who were unknown, and other categories of narrators. All of this was to protect the status of the Prophet, the seal of the Prophets and the leader of mankind (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), lest any lie be attributed to him and lest anything be attributed to him that he did not say or do. May Allah be pleased with them and make them pleased and make the Paradise of al-Firdaws their abode.

QuizTime(32): Which Sahaba was called "The Keeper of the Secret of the Messenger of Allah"?

Ans: Hudhayfah ibn Al-Yaman(R.a)

Alqamah (rahimahullah) says, “I went to Sham [Syria] and offered two rak’ahs of Salah. Then I said, ‘O Allah! Bless me with a righteous companion!’ I went to some people and sat with them. An old man came and sat beside me. I asked, ‘Who is this?’ They answered, ‘Abud Darda’.’ I said, ‘I asked Allah to bless me with a righteous companion, and He has blessed me with you.’

Abud Darda (radiyallahu ‘anhu) asked ‘Alqamah, ‘Where are you from?’ I replied, ‘From the people of Kufah.’ He said, ‘Is not Ibn Ummi ‘Abd [‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud radiyallahu ‘anhu], the keeper of [Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam]’s sandals, pillow and wudu water among you [in Kufah]?

Is there not among you the one whom Allah protected from Shaytan [‘Ammar radiyallahu ‘anhu]?

Is there not among you the confidant/keeper of secrets of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), whom no one but he knows [i.e Hudhayfah radiyallahu ‘anhu]?’…

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3742)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) explains, ‘secrets’ refers to the information regarding the Munafiqun.

(Fathul Bari, under Hadith: 3742/3)

One of the gravest problems the Muslims of Madinah had to face was the existence in their midst of hypocrites (munafiqun) particularly from among the Jews and their allies. Although many of them had declared their acceptance of Islam, the change was only superficial and they continued to plot and intrigue against the Prophet and the Muslims.

Because of Hudhayfah's ability to keep a secret, the Prophet, peace be on him, confided in him the names of the munafiqin. It was a weighty secret which the Prophet did not disclose to any other off his Companions.

He gave Hudhayfah the task of watching the movements of the munafiqin, following their activities, and shielding the Muslims from the sinister danger they represented. It was a tremendous responsibility. The munafiqin, because they acted in secrecy and because they knew all the developments and plans of the Muslims from within presented a greater threat to the community than the outright hostility of the kuffar.

From this time onwards. Hudhayfah was called "The Keeper of the Secret of the Messenger of Allah". Throughout his life he remained faithful to his pledge not to disclose the names of the hypocrites. After the death of the Prophet, the Khalifah often came - to him to seek his advice concerning their movements and activities but he remained tight-lipped and cautious.

QuizTime(30): Who is the third Khalifa of Islam who prepared one unified version of the Qur’an?

QuizTime(30): Who is the third Khalifa of Islam who prepared one unified version of the Qur’an?

Ans: ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan (may Allaah be pleased with him).

The Sahaabi Zayd ibn Thaabit (may Allaah be pleased with him) knew the Qur’aan by heart but he was methodical in his confirmation; he would not agree to write down any verse until two of the Sahaabah testified that they had heard it from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

This Mus-haf (written copy of the Qur’aan) remained in the hands of the caliphs until the time of the Rightly-Guided Caliph ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan (may Allaah be pleased with him). The Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) had dispersed to different lands, and they used to recite the Qur’aan according to what they had heard of the seven recitations from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and each of their students used to recite according to what he had heard from his shaykh. If a student heard someone reciting in a manner different from what he knew, he would denounce him and accuse him of making a mistake, and this went on until the Sahaabah feared that there would be fitnah (trouble) between the Taabi’een and successive generations. So they thought that they should unite the people in following one recitation, which was in the dialect of Quraysh in which the Qur’aan had first been revealed, so as to dispel any disputes and resolve the matter. ‘Uthmaan (may Allaah be pleased with him) was consulted, and he agreed with this opinion.

Al-Bukhaari narrated in his Saheeh (4988) from Anas ibn Maalik that Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamaan came to ‘Uthmaan at the time when the people of Shaam (Syria) and the people of Iraq were waging war to conquer Armenia and Azerbaijan. Hudhayfah was alarmed by their (the people of Sham and Iraq) differences in the recitation of the Qur’aan, so he said to 'Uthmaan, "O Ameer al-Mu’mineen! Save this nation before they dispute about the Book (Qur’aan) as the Jews and the Christians did before." So 'Uthmaan sent a message to Hafsah saying, "Send us the manuscript of the Qur’aan so that we may make copies of the Mus-haf and we will return the manuscript to you."

Hafsah sent it to 'Uthmaan. Then 'Uthmaan ordered Zayd ibn Thaabit, 'Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, Sa’eed ibn al-‘Aas and ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Haarith ibn Hishaam to copy out the manuscripts. 'Uthmaan said to the three men who were from Quraysh (the tribe of which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was a member), “In case you disagree with Zayd ibn Thaabit on any point in the Qur’aan, then write it in the dialect of Quraysh, for the Qur’aan was revealed in their tongue." They did so, and when they had written many copies, 'Uthmaan returned the original manuscripts to Hafsah.

'Uthmaan sent to every Muslim province one copy of what they had copied, and ordered that all the other Qur'aanic materials, whether written in fragmentary manuscripts or whole copies, be burnt.

Ibn Shihaab said: Khaarijah ibn Zayd ibn Thaabit told me that he heard Zayd ibn Thaabit say: “When we made copies of the Mus-haf I missed a verse of al-Ahzaab that I used to hear the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recite. So we searched for it and we found it with Khuzaymah ibn Thaabit al-Ansaari. (The verse was) ‘Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allaah’ [al-Ahzaab 33:23 – interpretation of the meaning]. So we put it in its place in its soorah in the Mus-haf.”

Thus an end was put to dispute and the Muslims were united. The Qur’aan has remained and will remain narrated from generation to generation and preserved in men's hearts until the Day of Resurrection. This is how Allaah has preserved His Book, in confirmation of the verse in which He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, We, it is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’aan) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption)”

QuizTime(28) Who was that Sahabi made a deal to give-up all his money in Makkah to Quraysh when he was caught on the way to Madina ?

Ans: Suhayb ar-Rumi(r.a)

One cold night, Suhayb pretended he had some stomach problems and went out repeatedly as if responding to calls of nature. His captors said one to another: "Don't worry. Al-Lat and al-'Uzza are keeping him busy with his stomach."

They became relaxed and sleep got the better of them. Suhayb quietly slipped out as if he was going to the toilet. He armed himself and headed to Madinah. When his captors awoke, they realised that Suhayb was gone. They got horses ready and set out in hot pursuit and eventually caught up with him. Seeing them approach. Suhayb clambered up a hill. Holding his bow and arrow at the ready, he shouted: "Men of Quraysh! You know, by God, by God, that I am one of the best archers and my aim is unerring. By God, if you come near me, with each arrow I have, I shall kill one of you. Then I shall strike with my sword."

One of them responded: "By God, we shall not let you escape from us with your life and money. You came to Makkah weak and poor and you have acquired what you have acquired."

"What would you say if I leave you my wealth?" interrupted Suhayb. "Would you get out of my way?" "Yes." they agreed. Suhayb described the place in his house in Makkah where he had left the money, and they allowed him to go.

He set off as quickly as he could for Madinah cherishing the prospect of being with the Prophet and of having the freedom to worship God in peace. When Suhayb reached Quba, just outside Madinah where the Prophet (SAWS) alighted after his Hijrah (emigration), the Prophet (SAWS) saw him approaching. He was overjoyed and greeted Suhayb with beaming smiles.

Allah Says, #"And there is a type of man who gives his life to earn the pleasure of God. And God is full of kindness to His servants."# (The Holy Qur'an, 2:207).

The Prophet (SAWS) loved Suhayb a great deal. He was commended by the Prophet (SAWS) and described as preceding the Byzantines to Islam. In addition to his piety and sobriety, Suhayb was also light-hearted at times and had a good sense of humour. Suhayb was also known for his generosity. He was a good example of the Qur'anic verse: #"And they give food, for the love of God, to the needy, the orphan and the captive."#(Holy Qur'an, 76:8)

He was selected by 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab to lead the Muslims in the period between his death and the choosing of his successor.

QuizTime(27) Who was that  person, demanded Women, children as a article of security against the loan(debt) from a Sahabi ?

Ans:  Ka'b bin al-ashraf.

Ka‘b bin Al-Ashraf was the most resentful Jew at Islam and the Muslims, the keenest on inflicting harm on the Messenger of Allâh (Peace be upon him) and the most zealous advocate of waging war against him.

When Abu Sufyan asked him which religion he was more inclined to, the religion of the Makkans or that of Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and his companions, he replied that the pagans were better guided.

Respect to this situation, Allâh revealed His Words:

“Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They believe in Jibt and Taghût, and say to the disbelievers that they are better guided as regards the way than the believers (Muslims).” [4:51]

He then returned to Madinah to start a fresh campaign of slanderous propaganda that took the form of obscene songs and amatory sonnets with a view to defaming the Muslim women.

At this stage, the situation became unbearable and could no longer be put up with. The Prophet (Peacebe upon him) gathered his men and said: “Who will kill Ka‘b bin Al-Ashraf? He had maligned Allâh, and His Messenger.” Thereupon, Muhammad bin Maslamah, ‘Abbad bin Bishr, Al-Harith bin Aws, Abu ‘Abs bin Hibr and Salkan bin Salamah, Ka‘b’s foster brother, volunteered to do the job.

Muhammad bin Maslamah said: “O Messenger of Allâh, do you wish that I should kill him?” He said: Yes.” He said: “Permit me to talk (to him in the way I deem fit).” He said: “Talk (as you like).” So, Muhammad bin Maslamah came to Ka‘b and talked to him, saying: “This man (i.e. the Prophet (Peace be upon him)) has made up his mind to collect charity (from us) and this has put us to a great hardship.” When he heard this, Ka‘b said: “By Allâh you will be put to more trouble by him.”

Muhammad bin Maslamah answered: “No doubt, now we have become his followers and we do not like to forsake him until we see what turn his affairs will take. I want that you should give me a loan.” He said: “What will you mortgage?” Muhammad answered: “What do you want?” The immoral and heartless Jew demanded women and children as articles of security against the debt. Muhammad said:

Should we pledge our women whereas you are the most handsome of the Arabs; and the son of one of us may be abused by saying that he was pledged for two wasq (measurement unit of weight) of dates but we can pledge you (our) weapons.” Ka‘b agreed. Salkan bin Salamah, Abu Na’ilah, at another time, went to see Ka‘b for the same purpose and there were more or less the same subjects, only that Abu Na’ilah would bring him some companions. The plan was successful and provided for the presence of both men and weapons.

On Rabi‘ Al-Awwal 14th, at night, the year 3 A.H. the people said good bye to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and set out in the Name of Allâh to implement the carefully drawn plan. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) stayed back praying for them and supplicating Allâh to render them success. The men went and called upon him at night. He came down although his wife warned him not to meet them alleging that: “I hear a voice which sounds like the voice of murder.” He said: “It is only Muhammad bin Maslamah and my foster brother Abu Na’ilah. When a gentleman is called at night even if he be pierced with a spear, he should respond to the call.”

Abu Na’ilah said to his companions: “As he comes down, I will extend my hand towards his head to smell and when I hold him fast, you should do your job.” So when he came down, they talked together for about an hour.

They then invited him to go out and spend a nice time in the moonlight. On the way out, Abu Na’ilah remarked: “I smell the nicest perfume from you.” Ka‘b said: “Yes, I have with me a mistress who is the most scented of the women of Arabia.” Abu Na’ilah again said: “Allow me to smell (the scent on your head)”. He said: “Yes, you may smell.” So he caught it and smelt. Then he said: “Allow me to do so (once again).” He then held his head fast and said to his companions: “Do your job.” And they killed him. The group of men came back after fulfilling their mission.

One of them Al-Harith bin Aws was wounded by mistake with the swords of his men, and was bleeding badly. When they reached Baqee‘ Al-Gharqad, they shouted, “Allâh is Great”. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) heard them and realized that they had killed the enemy of Allâh. As they saw him, he said: “Cheerful faces are yours.” In reply, they said: “And yours O Messenger of Allâh.” They handed the head of the tyrant over to him. He entertained Allâh’s praise for their success. He then applied his saliva to Al-Harith’s wound and it healed on the spot.
