QuizTime(87): Which Prophet, prayed to Allah from the belly of the Whale?

QuizTime(87): Which Prophet, prayed to Allah from the belly of the Whale?

Ans: Yunus(pbuh).

The Qur'an says in Surat As-Saffat: "And Jonah was also one of the Messengers, when he fled to the laden ship. He (agreed to) cast lots and he was of the rebutted. Then the whale swallowed him, and he was blameworthy. Had he not been of those who glorify God, he would certainly have stayed in its belly until the Day of Resurrection. So, We cast him out upon the bare shore in a state of sickness, and We caused to grow over him a marrow plant. And We sent him to a hundred thousand or more, and they believed, so We bestowed on them provision until their appointed time." (Qur’an ch 37 verse 139-148)

QuizTime (86): Who chewed the liver of Hamzah bin ‘Abd-Al-Muttalib(r.a) ?

QuizTime (86): Who chewed the liver of Hamzah bin ‘Abd-Al-Muttalib(r.a) ?

Ans: Hind bint ‘Utbah(R.A)(May Allah please with her)

It was narrated on the authority of Ibn Mas‘ood, may Allah be pleased with him, about the events of the Battle of Uhud, as cited by Imaam Ahmad and others. It says, "They looked and, behold, Hamzah's belly was cut open, and Hind had taken his liver and chewed it but could not eat it." Note: Hadith authenticity is questionable.

The woman was Hind bint ‘Utbah, who later embraced Islam and became a righteous Muslim woman. She, may Allah be pleased with her, made the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and earned the pleasure of her Lord.

The reason for her actions was narrated in the book Dalaa'il An-Nubuwwah by Al-Bayhaqi; she had made a vow to eat his liver when he killed her father in the Battle of Badr.

In general, the authenticity of the story of Hind eating the liver of Hamzah is questionable. Even if it is assumed that the story is authentic, she (Hind) later embraced Islam and became a good and righteous Muslim; verily, Islam wipes out all past sins committed before it, as stated in the authentic hadeeth that was cited in Saheeh Muslim.

“Wahshi”(r.a).  “Hamzah, may Allah be pleased with him, had killed Tu‘aymah bin ‘Adiyy bin Al-Khiyaar at the Battle of Badr, so my master, Jubayr bin Mut‘im said to me, “If you kill Hamzah in revenge for my paternal uncle, you will be set free.”

There are many people blame directly to “Hind bint ‘Utbah(R.A)” for killing for  Hamzah(R.a) which is incorrect.

Lesson:

The once vicious enemies of Islam, Abu Sufyan (ra) and Hind (ra) began to work to promote it . The lady who used to sing fierce poetry for the opponents of the Prophet (sa), now recited Quranic verses to keep the morale of Muslim soldiers high. Such is the fruit of guidance! She was present at the Battle of Yarmuk, and narrated several ahadeeth that were recorded and authenticated in various books of ahadeeth.

At one point, when arrows started raining down on Abu Sufyan and he tried to turn his horse away, Hind struck his horse in the face with a tent-peg and said: “Where do you think you’re going, O Sakhr? Go back to battle and put effort into it until you compensate for having incited people in the past against Muhammad.”(pbuh) An arrow later hit Abu Sufyan in the eye and he became blind.

Her transformation a true inspiration for all of us.

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."[Al-Qur’an ch 39 Verse 53]

QuizTime (85): Which Surah & its sisters surahs turned Prophet (saw) hair grey and Number of grey hairs Prophet has on head & beard?

QuizTime (85): Which Surah & its sisters surahs turned Prophet (saw) hair grey and Number of grey hairs Prophet has on head & beard?

Ans: Surah Hud(11) its Sisters Al-Waqia (56), Al-Mursalat (77), An-Naba’ (78) and Al-Takwir (81).

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said that Surah Hud and its sisters turned his hair grey. The sisters of this Surah are: Al-Waqia (56), Al-Mursalat (77), An-Naba’ (78) and Al-Takwir (81). The evidence for this is the Hadith reported by Al Tirmizi and Al Hakim.  Al Zahbi considered this Hadith sound in his comments on Al Mustadrak.

The Prophet, (pbuh), had a few white hairs on his head and beard, which were almost twenty in number. When he wore oil on his head and beard, the white hairs would not show, and vice versa.

It is makrooh to pluck grey hair from the head or moustache, because of the hadeeths narrated from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) concerning that, such as:

The report narrated by at-Tirmidhi from Ka‘b ibn Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: “Whoever has one hair that turns grey in Islam, it will be light (noor) for him on the Day of Resurrection.”

QuizTime(84): Which Companion married two of Rasulullah's (pbuh) daughters?

Ans: Uthman Ibn Affan (radiallahu anhu).

1) Uthman (RA) was married to the Prophet's daughter, Ruqayya.

2) Ruqayya took ill in Madinah and died thereafter. Uthman was very sad. So the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) married his second daughter, Umm Kulthum (RA) to Uthman. This was a great honour. Uthman came to be known as "Thun Noorain," i.e. the possessor of two lights.

QuizTime (83): Which prophet’s people were ordered to share their wells water between them and She-Camel?

QuizTime (83): Which prophet’s people were ordered to share their wells water between them and She-Camel?

Ans: Prophet Saleh (Pbuh).

Then they put forward their demand: Saleh AS should call upon his Lord to produce before them a she-camel with unique characteristics. According to their description, she should be tall and pregnant. Only if Saleh could bring them such a sign would they believe him.

Saleh AS, being a prophet, was a compassionate man. Fearing Allah’s punishment towards his people, he longed to save them. As impertinent as their demand was, he earnestly hoped that its fulfilment might be the means of their salvation. And he prayed to Allah.

All at once a pregnant camel matching his people’s description merged out of a rock on a hill. Saleh AS called her “Naqat-Allah”, Allah’s She-Camel, adding “Allah” to the word “naqah” to give her respect and honour

Saleh AS then addressed his people, ordering them not to harm the she-camel and to allow her to graze freely. This order did not pose a problem, since the camel’s grazing would not lessen his people’s own food supply. But her drinking was a different matter, for due to the she-camel’s size, she would consume a great quantity of water from their wells. However, the divine order now came to Saleh AS to inform his people that the water that was given to them by Allah is to be shared between them and the she-camel.

Saleh AS reminded his people of Allah’s abundant favours and blessings and he reminded them not to commit abuse nor spread corruption.

For a time the she-camel enjoyed complete freedom of movement among the people, grazing freely. And as they been ordered, they also allowed her access to their water supply.

She gave a huge amount of milk. It is narrated that this was in exchange for the water. Ibn Kathir cites a hadith stating that they used to drink their water one day and her milk the alternate day. And soon she gave birth to a male calf, who trailed along her side on long, unsteady legs.

QuizTime(81): Which Prophet of Allah met(on earth) maximum number of Prophets in his life time?

QuizTime(81): Which Prophet of Allah met(on earth) maximum number of Prophets in his life time?

Ans:  Isaac(Peace be upon Him).

Isaac (Peace be upon Him) met following prophets.

               1) Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) à Father

               2) Prophet Ismail (pbuh) à Brother

               3) Prophet Lut (pbuh) à cousin brother

               4) Prophet Yaqoob(pbuh)àSon

               5) Prophet Yusuf(pbuh)àGrandson

Family of Ibraaheem(pbuh).

Other Prophets who were alive at the time of Ibraaheem (peace be upon him) were)

            Loot(pbuh)ànephew

            Ismaa’eel (pbuh)àSon

            Ishaaq, (pbuh) and àson

            Ya’qoob. (pbuh)àgrandson

They met each other but it’s from Ya’qoob(pbuh), his son Yosuf(pbuh) blessed with  prophet hood and before Isaac(pbuh) death, Ya’qoob return to Isaac and they both lived at the place Harbon, where Ibrahim(pbuh) lived.

a    Prophet Lut(pbuh):

“And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, "Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."[Al-Qur’an ch 29 Verse 26]

“Allah tells us that Lut believed in Ibrahim. It was said that he was the son of Ibrahim's brother, and that his name was Lut bin Haran bin Azar. None of Ibrahim's people believed in Ibrahim besides Lut and Sarah the wife of Ibrahim”. [Tafsir ibn Kathir]

b)     Prophet Ishmael(pbuh):

"Once more Abraham thought of visiting his family he had left at Mecca and he told his wife (Sarah) of his decision. HE went and found Ishmael behind the Zam-zam well, mending his arrows. He said: 'O Ishmael, your Lord has ordered me to build a house for Him.' Ishmael said: 'Obey the order of your Lord.' Abraham said: 'Allah has also ordered me that you should help me therein.' Ishmael said: 'Then I will do so.' So both of them were saying:

"O our Lord! Accept this service of us, verily, You are the All Hearer, the All Knower." (Ch 2:127)

c)      Prophet Ishaq(pbuh):

The Quran does not give details of Isaac's life (pbuh), but reliable Quranic commentators mentioned that when Abraham felt that his life was drawing to a close, he wished to see Isaac married. He did not want Isaac to marry one of the Canaanites, who were pagans, so he sent a trustworth servant to Haran in Iraq to choose a bride for Isaac. The servant's choice fell upon Rebekah Bint Bethuel, Ibn Nahor (who was a brother of Abraham). Isaac married her and she gave birth to a set of twins, Esau (Al Eis) and Jacob (Yaqub).

d)     Yaqoob(pbuh):

This was the advice of Abraham—as well as Jacob—to his children, ˹saying˺, “Indeed, Allah has chosen for you this faith; so do not die except in ˹a state of full˺ submission.”[Al-Qur’an ch 2 verse 132]

It might be that Ibrahim advised his children, including Jacob, Isaac's son, who were present. It appears, and Allah knows best, that Isaac was endowed with Jacob, during the lifetime of Ibrahim and Sarah, for the good news includes both of them in Allah's statement,

(But We gave her (Sarah) glad tidings of Ishaq (Isaac), and after Ishaq, of Ya`qub (Jacob)) (11:71). Also, if Jacob was not alive then, there would be no use here in mentioning him specifically among Isaac's children. Also, Allah said in Surat Al-`Ankabut, (And We bestowed on him (Ibrahim), Ishaq and Ya`qub, and We ordained among his offspring prophethood and the Book.) (29:27), and, (And We bestowed upon him Ishaq, and (a grandson) Ya`qub) (21:72), thus, indicating that this occurred during Ibrahim's lifetime. Also, Jacob built Bayt Al-Maqdis, as earlier books testified. The Two Sahihs recorded that Abu Dharr said, "I said, `O Messenger of Allah! Which Masjid was built first' He said, (Al-Masjid Al-Haram (Al-Ka`bah).) I said, `Then' He said, (Bayt Al- Maqdis.) I said, `How many years later' He said, (Forty years.)'' Further, the advice that Jacob gave to his children, which we will soon mention, testifies that Jacob was among those who received the advice mentioned in Ayat above (2:130-132).

The Sons of Ya’qoob(pbuh)

Jacob's sons were twelve men. From Leah there were Rueben (Robil), Simon (Shamun), Levi (Lawi), Judah (Yahudh), Issachar (Isakher), and Zebulun (Zablun). From Rachel there were Joseph (Yusuf) (pbuh) and Benjamin. From Rachel's slave there were Dan and Naphtali (Neftali),and from Leah's slave there were Gad and Asher.

Isaac's Death

Jacob came to his father Isaac and settled with him in the village of Hebron which lies in the land of Canaan where Abraham had lived. Then Isaac fell ill and died when he was one hundred eighty years old. his sons Esau and Jacob buried him with his father Abraham Al Khalil in a cave which he had bought. It was said that Abraham died at the age of one hundred seventy five.

Callouts:  Al-Isra' Wal-Mi'raj:  Prophet Mohammed(pbuh) led other prophets in  prayer but Al-Isra  was miracle & this was completely different than the general scenario, when we said “On Earth” which means excluding “Al-Isra’ Wal-Mi’raj”.

All those who answered as “prophet Mohammed(pbuh)” also correct but we are referring within the life span of all prophets on earth.

QuizTime(80): Which daughter outlived Rasulullah (SAW) by six months?

QuizTime(80): Which daughter outlived Rasulullah (SAW) by six months?

Ans: Faatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) the daughter of the leader of mankind, Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Faatimah lived for six months after the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). She was buried at night. Al-Waaqidi said: this is the most correct view. He said, al-‘Abbaas prayed (the funeral prayer) for her, and he, ‘Ali and al-Fadl lowered her into her grave. All his (SAW) children apart from Fatimah (RA) died during the lifetime of the Prophet (SAW).

Faatimah’s speech most closely resembled that of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “I never saw anyone whose speech more closely resembled that of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) than Faatimah. When she entered upon him, he would stand up to greet her, kiss her and welcome her, and she would do the same for him.”

It was narrated from Masrooq that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said:"... When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed away, I asked her and she said, ‘He told me, “Jibreel used to review the Qur’aan with me once every year, but this year he has reviewed it with me twice, so I know that my appointed time (of death) is approaching. And you will be the first of my family to join me.” So I wept. Then he said, “Would it not please you to be the leader of the women of Paradise or the women of the believers?” So I smiled.’”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Manaaqib, 3353).

Quiz Time (79) Which Prophet of Allah prohibited camel meat and Milk for himself?

Quiz Time (79) Which Prophet of Allah prohibited camel meat and Milk for himself?

Ans: Yaqub(Pbuh).

“All food was lawful to the Children of Israel, except what Isra'il made unlawful for himself before the Tawrah was revealed. Say: "Bring here the Tawrah and recite it, if you are truthful. ''[Al-Qur’an ch 3 Verses 93]

THE QUESTIONS THAT THE JEWS ASKED OUR PROPHET:

mam Ahmad recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, "A group of Jews came to Allah's Prophet and said, `Talk to us about some things we will ask you and which only a Prophet would know.' He said, `Ask me about whatever you wish. However, give your pledge to Allah, similar to the pledge that Ya`qub took from his children, that if I tell you something and you recognize its truth, you will follow me in Islam.' They said, `Agreed.' The Prophet said, `Ask me about whatever you wish.' They said, `Tell us about four matters:

1. What kinds of food did Isra'il prohibit for himself?

2. What about the sexual discharge of the woman and the man, and what role does each
play in producing male or female offspring ?

3. Tell us about the condition of the unlettered Prophet during sleep ?

4. And who is his Wali (supporter) among the angels'?

The Prophet took their covenant that they will follow him if he answers these questions, and they agreed.

1) He said, `I ask you by He Who sent down the Tawrah to Musa, do you not know that Isra'il once became very ill When his illness was prolonged, he vowed to Allah that if He cures His illness, he would prohibit the best types of drink and food for himself. Was not the best food to him camel meat and the best drink camel milk' They said, `Yes, by Allah.' The Messenger said, `O Allah, be Witness against them.

2) ' The Prophet then said, `I ask you by Allah, other than Whom there is no deity (worthy of worship), Who sent down the Tawrah to Musa, do you not know that man's discharge is thick and white and woman's is yellow and thin If any of these fluids becomes dominant, the offspring will take its sex and resemblance by Allah's leave. Hence, if the man's is more than the woman's, the child will be male, by Allah's leave. If the woman's discharge is more than the man's, then the child will be female, by Allah's leave.' They said, `Yes.' He said, `O Allah, be Witness against them

3).' He then said, `I ask you by He Who sent down the Tawrah to Musa, do you not know that the eyes of this unlettered Prophet sleep, but his heart does not sleep' They said, `Yes, by Allah!' He said, `O Allah, be Witness.'

 4) They said, `Tell us now about your Wali among the angels, for this is when we either follow or shun you.' He said, `My Wali (who brings down the revelation from Allah) is Jibril, and Allah never sent a Prophet, but Jibril is his Wali.' They said, `We then shun you. Had you a Wali other than Jibril, we would have followed you.' On that, Allah, the Exalted revealed, (Say: "Whoever is an enemy to Jibril...'') (2:97).''

QuizTime (78) Which Prophet is still alive and will descend back onto the earth at the end of time?

QuizTime (78) Which Prophet is still alive and will descend back onto the earth at the end of time?

Ans: Isa(pbuh).

Allaah, The Most High, informed us in the Qur'aan that Isa (Jesus), the son of Mary, may Allaah exalt their mention, will descend from the heavens to earth in the last days. Many narrations of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) confirmed this as well, so there is no room for doubt about his descent.

Allaah Says (interpretaion of meaning): "And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), but must believe in him ['Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), as only a Messenger of Allaah and a human being], before his ['Iesa (Jesus) or a Jew's or a Christian's] death (at the time of the appearance of the angel of death). And on the Day of Resurrection, he ['Iesa (Jesus)] will be a witness against them" (An-Nisa 4:159)

Al-Hasan Al-Basri, said: "This means before he dies, and I swear by Allah that he is alive, and when he will descend, everybody will believe in him." This is also the opinion of Said Ibn Jubair, Al-Dahhak and Ibn Jarir Al-Tabari.

Imam Al-Shawkani said: "It means believing in him when he will descend in the last days, as it is reported by many Ahadith, the narrators of which are impossible to agree on a lie."

Allaah Says in Surah Al-Zukhruf after mentioning Issa, son of Mary, (interpretation of meaning): "And he ['Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)] shall be a known sign for (the coming of) the Hour (Day of Resurrection) [i.e. 'Iesa's (Jesus) descent on the earth. Therefore have no doubt concerning it (i.e. the Day of Resurrection). And follow Me (Allâh) (i.e. be obedient to Allâh and do what He orders you to do, O mankind)! This is the Straight Path (of Islâmic Monotheism, leading to Allah and to His Paradise). (Az-Zukhruf 43:61)

Al-Tabari said: "This means that the coming back of Isa is a sign of the coming of the Hour (Day of resurrection)."

Ibn Abbas said 'and he' means the descent of Issa.

Mujahid said: "and he will be a known sign for the closeness Hour, that's to say that one of the signs of the hour is the descent of Issa before the Day of Judgment." This is also the opinion of Al-Hasan, Qatada, Al-Suddy, and Al-Dahhak.

So both the verse of Allaah and the sayings of the interpreters of the Holy Qur'aan; the companions and the pious predecessors indicate that issa (Jesus), may Allaah exdalt his mention, will descend again before The Day of Judgment.

QuizTime(77): Which Prophet missed his son so much that his eyes became whitened from grief ?

QuizTime(77): Which Prophet missed his son so much that his eyes became whitened from grief ?

Ans: Prophet Yaqub(Jacob's) (a.s).

Its Mentioned in the Qur'an.

"And he turned away from them, and said: "How great is my grief for Joseph!" And his eyes became white with sorrow, and he fell into silent melancholy." [Al-Qur'an ch 12 Verse 84]

Story in brief:

"We were surprised after returning from the race that Joseph was in the belly of the wolf." "We did not see him!" "You will not believe us even though we are truthful! we are telling you what happened!" "The wolf has eaten Joseph!"

"This is Joseph's shirt. We foiled it soiled with blood, and did not find Joseph!" They brought his shirt stained with false blood. (Ch 12:18)

Deep down in the heart Jacob knew that his beloved son was still alive and that his other sons were lying. He held the blood stained in his hands, spread it out and remarked: "What a merciful

wolf! he ate up my beloved son without tearing his shirt!" Their faces turned red when he demanded more information, but each swore by Allah that he was telling the truth. The brokenhearted father burst into tears:

"Nay! But your ownselves have made up a tale. So for me patience is more fitting. It is Allah Alone whose Help can be sought against that which you assert." (Ch 12:18)

The father acted wisely by praying for mighty patience, which is free of doubt, and by trusting in Allah for help against what they had plotted against him and his son.

The father was deeply hurt. Only prayer could comfort him and strengthen his faith and patience. Weeping all those years for his beloved son Joseph - and now one more of his best sons had been snatched from him - Jacob almost lost his sight.

The other sons pleaded with him: "O father, you are a noble prophet and a great messenger of Allah. Unto you descended revelation and people received guidance and faith from you. Why are you destroying yourself in this way?" Jacob replied: "Rebuking me will not lessen my grief. Only the return of my sons will comfort me.

QuizTime (76): Which prophet of Allah woke up from 70 years of sleep and then again he sleeps and completed 100 years?

QuizTime (76): Which prophet of Allah woke up from 70 years of sleep and then again he sleeps and completed 100 years?

Ans: Prophet Aramaya (Jeremiah).

Another prophet is Jeremiah (pbuh) Ibn Hilkiah from the House of Levi Ibn Jacob (pbuh). It has been claimed that he was Al-Khidr. This was related by Al-Dahak from Ibn Abbas but it is not true.

Jeremiah Sleeps for 100 Years, Jerusalem is rebuilt:

Hashim ibn Al-Kalbi reported that Allah the Exalted revealed to Jeremiah: "I am going to reconstruct Jerusalem, so go there." He went and found it devastated. He said to himself: "Exalted be Allah! Allah told me to come to this city and that He was reconstructing it. When will Allah rebuild it? And when will He bring it back to life?"

Then he slept, and his donkey with him, for seventy years until Nebuchadnezzar and the king over him - Laharasab, who had ruled one hundred twenty years - had perished. Laharasab was

succeeded by his son Bashtaasib (According to the Bible, Ezra 1, this would be King Cyrus of Persia). News of the death of Nebuchadnezzar had reached Bashtaasib through Sham (Syria),

which was in utter ruin. the wild beats had multiplied in Palestine, for it had become empty of men. Bashtaasib therefore called to the children of Israel in Babylon: "Whoever wants to return to Sham (Syria/Palestine) may do so."

It was ruled by one from the House of David, who was ordered by Bashtaasib to rebuild Jerusalem and its temple, so they returned and rebuilt it. Then Jeremiah opened his eyes, blinked from the seventy year sleep, and saw how the city was being reconstructed. He remained in that sleep of his until he had completed one hundred years. When Allah awoke him, he thought that he had slept no more than an hour. He had known the city as a devastated land; when he saw it rebuilt and populated, he said:

"He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and he, to whom wisdom is granted, is indeed granted abundant good. But none remember (will receive admonition) except men of understanding." [2:269]

[Source: Stories of prophets by Ibn Kathir page no : 159-164]

There is no mention in the Holy Qur’an or in the Prophet’s Sunnah of the name Jeremiah, and there is no affirmation that he was one of the Prophets; rather this is something that was mentioned by the historians.

Quiz Time (75): Who was that knowledgeable person from Bani Israel, whom Allah compared him with Dog?

Ans: Bal’am bin Ba’ura.

“And recite to them the story of him to whom We gave Our Ayat, but he threw them away; so Shaytan followed him up, and he became of those who went astray. And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith, but he clung to the earth and followed his own vain desires. So his parable is the parable of a dog: if you drive him away, he pants, or if you leave him alone, he (still) pants. Such is the parable of the people who reject Our Ayat. So relate the stories, perhaps they may reflect.Evil is the parable of the people who rejected Our Ayat, and used to wrong themselves. (Qur’an Al-A’raf 07, Verses 175-177)

"Is about Bal`am bin Ba`ura' a man from the Children of Israel.'' Shu`bah and several other narrators narrated this statement from Mansur who got it from Ibn Mas`ud. Sa`id bin Abi `Arubah narrated that Qatadah said that Ibn `Abbas said, "He is Sayfi, son of Ar-Rahib.'' Qatadah commented that Ka`b said, "He was a man from Al-Balqla' (a province of Jordan) who knew Allah's Greatest Name. He used to live in Bayt Al-Maqdis with the tyrants.'' Al-`Awfi reported that Ibn `Abbas said, "He is Bal`am bin Ba`ura', a man from Yemen whom Allah had given the knowledge of His Ayat, but he abandoned them.'' Malik bin Dinar said, "He was one of the scholars of the Children of Israel whose supplication was acceptable. They used to seek his lead in supplication in times of difficulty. Allah's Prophet Musa sent him to the King of Madyan to call him to Allah. That king appeased him and gave him land and gifts, and he reverted from the religion of Musa and followed the king's religion.'' `Imran bin `Uyaynah narrated that `Husayn said that `Imran bin Al-Harith said that Ibn `Abbas said, "He is Bal`am son of Ba`ura'.'' Similar was said by Mujahid and `Ikrimah. Therefore, it is well-known that this honorable Ayah was revealed about a man from the Children of Israel in ancient times, according to Ibn Mas`ud and several others among the Salaf. `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas said, "He is a man from the city of the tyrants (Jerusalem) whose name was Bal`am and who knew Allah's Greatest Name.'' `Ali bin Abi Talhah also reported that Ibn `Abbas that he said, "When Musa and those with him went to the city of the tyrants (Jerusalem), the cousins of Bal`am and his people came to him and said, `Musa is a strong man, and he has many soldiers. If he gains the upper hand over us, we will be destroyed. Therefore, supplicate to Allah that He prevents Musa and those with him from prevailing over us.' Bal`am said, `If I supplicate to Allah that He turns back Musa and those with him, I will lose in this life and the Hereafter.' They kept luring him until he supplicated against Musa and his people, and Allah took away what he bestowed on him (of knowledge).

(So his parable is the parable of a dog: if you drive him away, he pants, or if you leave him alone, he (still) pants.)[Qur’an ch 7 Verse 176]

Scholars of Tafsir have conflicting opinions regarding the meaning of this Ayah. Some scholars said that it refers to the end of Bal`am's tongue which flickered out of his mouth, as in the story narrated from Ibn Ishaq, from Salim, from Abu An-Nadr. Therefore, his example is the example of the dog, its tongue pants regardless of whether it is driven away or not. It was also said that the meaning here is a parable of this man -- and his like -- concerning their misguidance, persisting the wrong path and not being able to benefit from faith or comprehend what they are being called to. So his example is that of a dog which pants whether it was driven away or left alone.

Quiz Time (74) who was that Sahabi presented few dates in Charity, people mocked him & Qur'an revealed?

Ans: “Abu `Aqil ”(R.a).

Abu Aqil (ra) was one of those companions of the Prophet (saws) who had the smallest of pockets but the biggest of hearts.

“Those who slander such of the believers as give themselves freely to (deeds of) charity, as well as such as can find nothing to give except the fruits of their labour,- and throw ridicule on them,- Allah will throw back their ridicule on them: and they shall have a grievous penalty”

[Al-Qur’an ch 9 Verse 79]

(Those who defame such of the believers who give charity voluntarily) (9:79).'''

A similar story was narrated from Mujahid and several others. Ibn Ishaq said……….As for the person who gave the little that he could afford, he was Abu `Aqil, from Bani Anif Al-Arashi, who was an ally of Bani `Amr bin `Awf.

He brought a Sa` of dates and added it to the charity. They laughed at him, saying, `Allah does not need the Sa` of Abu `Aqil.''' Allah said, (so they mock at them (believers); Allah will throw back their mockery on them) rebuking them for their evil actions and defaming the believers. Truly, the reward, or punishment, is equitable to the action. Allah treated them the way mocked people are treated, to aid the believers in this life. Allah has prepared a painful torment in the Hereafter for the hypocrites, for the recompense is similar to the deed.

When Muhammad (saws) asked Muslims to bring forth their charity / sadaqah for the expedition of Tabuk, he had nothing to give. But he didn't limit himself to what he didn't have.

He went out looking for work so he could contribute something, even if it's little and he found work with a Jew who needed some water hauling.

Abu Aqil was hence among the last to come forth with charity - a Sa` of dates (few dates).
He said: `O Allah's Messenger! This is a Sa` of dates. I spent the night bringing water and earned two Sa` of dates for my work. I kept one Sa` (for my family) and brought you the other Sa`.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) ordered him to spread it over all the charity (that others brought). His sadaqah was little but carried the weight of Uhud mountain.
