QuizTime (159): Who was the first man to be martyred in Makkah for Islam?

 

 

Ans: Yasir (R.a).

 Yasir; his wife,Sumayya; & their son, Ammar; (May Allah please with them all ) all three accepted Islam as soon as they heard the Call of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Ammar & his family were tormented so consistently that Prophet ﷺ would urge them to be patient by reminding them that they were destined for Paradise & The Yasir's(r.a) family were the first “whole family” to accept Islam (outside the family of Prophet ﷺ).

“Ibn Ishaq stated, "Bann Makhzum used to set Ammar b. Yasir and his father(Yasir r.a) and mother, all of whom had become Muslims, outside at heat of noon, torturing them with the hot ground of Mecca. The Messenger of God (SAAS) would pass by them and say to them, as I have heard, 'Be patient, O family of Yasir; you are destined for paradise."' Al-Bayhaqi related, from al-Hakim, from Ibrahim b. 'Ismat al-Adl, who said that Ai-Sarri b. Khuzayma related to him, quoting Muslim b. Ibrahim, quoting Hisham b. Abu ubayd Allah, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, who said that the Messenger of God (SAAS) passed by 'Ammar and his family while they were being tortured. He said, "Be of good cheer, O family of 'Ammar, O family of Yasir; you are destined for paradise."

His mother(Summaya.R.a), however, they actually did kill, for she refused anything but Islam. Imam Ahmad stated, "Waki related to us, from Sufya, from Mansnr, from Mujahid, who said, 'The first martyr to meet her death early in Islam was Ammar's mother Sumayya. Abu Jahl thrust a spear into her heart. 'This account lacks a complete chain of early authorities.” [Al-Sira al-Nabawiyya Vol 1 page 383]
